Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the right to challenge certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
