As any major awards ceremony approaches, one notices an outcry for the addition of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked completely in 2014
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
