A recent study indicates that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using such treatments must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to original mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
