In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Discussions Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
