The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
