Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
